I went to The National Wedding Show on Saturday at the NEC. It was a wonderfully inspiring exhibition and has given me so many new ideas for not only my designs but for the styling and presentation of my own shows that I intend to do later this year. I will keep you posted on my progress and maybe see you there!

So here is my low down on the year’s trends right now…

Having a colour scheme for your wedding is a very helpful starting point and can influence everything from your flowers, bridesmaids’ dresses and stationery to décor and believe it or not the drinks and food your guests will enjoy on the day. Why not have cocktails mixed to match your chosen colour scheme with co-ordinating paper straws or pastel macaroons and petits fours? On trend for the year is the re-vamped peaches and cream palette as well as the bright sunshine lemon yellows and mint or lime spring greens. Duck egg blue is making a welcome come back but with a new spin; try co-ordinating it with black and taupe for a fresh update on a timeless favourite.

Many clients have a theme in mind already when they come to me for help. This year vintage is still very much in vogue; from romantic, antique vintage chic and secret garden countryside settings to Alice in Wonderland or 50’s glamour. It was also lovely and refreshing to see a more subtle and minimalist take; clean neutral palettes with a precious touch of metallic silver or gold and the back-in-fashion gypsophila flower.

Also on trend, not surprisingly for this year, was a white, red and blue palette for a very patriotic British affair. It is after all another great year for us Brits with the upcoming Olympics and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, after the success of William and Katherine’s Royal Wedding last year. You could easily incorporate this with a vintage tea party theme; think union jack bunting and doilies.

Two of my favourites current themes have to be rustic French or memories of the sea side, with lavender and apricot hues or crisp whites and nautical blues. Think of using bunches of dried fragrant lavender and herbs, treasured beach finds such as shells and driftwood, or what about your very own ice cream van serving an alternative treat to your guests?

Just a few more thoughts before I go…why not try to be eclectic? Visit your local antique shops or flea markets...the car-boot season is nearly upon us! Think birdcages, beautifully bound old books, parasols and vintage luggage. How about using buttons, wooden pegs on washing lines or collecting jam jars and old bottles for an alternative way of styling flowers? Homemade paper poms and tempting jars of sweets and lollipops, kites, feathered fans and coloured glass…I could go on and on!

Signing off for now as I have a roast dinner to cook! Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone…
